What changed
OpenAI has lowered its near term fundraising ask by $10 billion, according to the Financial Times, and is seeking roughly $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion price tag. The FT, citing people familiar, said last month's push sought $30 billion, implying a $1.4 trillion valuation. Bloomberg News said last week the company was targeting a $1.25 trillion valuation while in the final phase of talks.
Who is circling the round
Some investors have pared back their commitments, a shift the FT linked to broader caution about the massive capital needs in AI. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 3.5% on Friday, underscoring the risk reset. The FT said the largest check is likely to come from investors based in the United Arab Emirates, including state-backed MGX. Other planned participants include SoftBank Group Corp. and venture firms Sequoia Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz, according to the report.
According to the report, OpenAI and Sequoia offered no comment, and the same was true for Founders Fund and SoftBank. The FT reported that there was no immediate response from MGX, Coatue and Andreessen Horowitz to a request for comment.

The Anthropic factor and what's next
The fundraising drive is meeting fresh competition from Anthropic, which is gearing up to go public next month at no less than a $1.5 trillion valuation, the FT reported. OpenAI is seeking additional funding after raising $122 billion in March, aiming to support heavy computing needs ahead of a possible IPO next year.
Why it matters for your portfolio
Valuation gravity is back in AI. A lower raise target, investors trimming commitments, and a peer preparing a blockbuster listing all point to tighter capital and sharper price discipline. If one of the category leaders takes money at $1.25 trillion while a rival aims for at least $1.5 trillion, that spread becomes a reference point for private marks, crossover funds, and public comps tied to the AI buildout.
