The trip and its timing
Anthony Albanese is expected to head to China's capital next month, per the South China Morning Post, which attributed the plan to unnamed people. The English-language paper said his Beijing stop would come after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' summit, which is scheduled for Nov. 18 and 19 in Shenzhen.
It also noted he last visited Beijing in July, and that a further trip next month would be his third time in the city since he took office in 2022.
What is driving the outreach
The push aims to stabilize relations that have been strained in recent years. According to the report, flashpoints include Australia's decision to bar Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. from its 5G networks and Canberra's introduction of a foreign interference law.
Another sore spot, the paper said, is Beijing's military activity in the South China Sea and in waters close to Australia.
