The deal as reported
People who asked not to be named because the talks are private described a two-part raise that prices Baseten at $26 billion in the first tranche and $30 billion in the second. Axios previously flagged the $26 billion number. Requests for comment went unanswered by Baseten, while Sands Capital declined to comment.
Where Baseten stands now
Baseten's platform lets businesses run multiple AI models in one place. Founded in 2019, the company hit a $13 billion valuation in June, following a $1.5 billion fundraise. It is backed by venture firms including Altimeter Capital, IVP and Spark Capital.
The market backdrop
Investors are crowding into AI inference, the stage where trained models are executed in real-world use. By some forecasts, outlays on chips and compute for inference could overtake the money spent on training, a shift tied to broader AI adoption and a tilt toward heavier workloads such as agents. Baseten's closest rival, Fireworks AI, which is backed by Sequoia Capital, closed a $1.5 billion round valuing it at $17.5 billion in July.

Why it matters for investors
More AI companies are leaning on inference platforms to curb the cost of running frontier models from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic PBC, in part by tailoring open models through fine-tuning to their needs. If that dynamic holds, the spending mix moves toward ongoing usage rather than one-off training cycles, with winners likely to be platforms that can orchestrate many models efficiently and the chipmakers powering those deployments.
