What changed
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is moving its Commitment of Traders report from a once-a-week routine to a midweek plus Friday cadence. Starting in December, the COT will publish at 3:30 p.m. in New York on Wednesdays and Fridays, shifting from the current Friday-only schedule.
The report catalogs positions in derivatives tied to energy and other commodities, and also covers currencies, equity indices and interest rates. For traders, it is a regular readout on who is long or short across key markets.
Why the schedule moved
The twice-weekly plan appeared in a slideshow presented at an agriculture industry gathering last week. At the Agricultural Commodity Futures Conference in Kansas, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said demand from farm-focused users drove the change: "We heard from the ag community that it can be more useful, so we listened," he said. "That's why we are working internally to publish the COT report twice a week by the end of the year, giving market participants access to more timely information about trading positions and activity in these markets."
The agency did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

How traders use COT
The COT details who is long and who is short, comparing positions from hedge funds and other asset managers with those of commercial participants, including energy producers and users and firms dealing in raw materials. Market participants scan those breakdowns for shifts in positioning and for signs that bets may be stretched.
What it means for your portfolio
More frequent COT data means quicker reads on positioning in futures linked to commodities, currencies, stock indices and rates. In plain English: if you trade macro or carry commodity exposure, you will see positioning signals twice as often, which can fine tune how you time entries and exits.
Learning how to use new technology thoughtfully often separates confident investors from the rest. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
