What Tencent announced
Tencent unveiled Hy Image 3.5 Preview, calling it its most capable image generator so far and a clear upgrade from the previous version. The reveal landed the same day Alibaba opened its AI conference, a well-timed signal that Tencent aims to close ground on leaders like ByteDance. The company said this is part of a bigger shift toward AI that can actually execute tasks for the enormous WeChat ecosystem, not just chat in text.
Product integration and testing
The new model is being integrated across Tencent properties, including the Yuanbao chatbot plus film-editing and design tools. According to Shenzhen-based Tencent, internal trials of Hy Image 3.5 Preview involved hundreds of the company's in-house designers. According to the company, outputs were on par with ByteDance's Seedream 5.0 Pro and a bit ahead of Alphabet's Google Nano Banana Pro and Alibaba's Qwen-Image-3.0 Pro, though it did not provide hard metrics. The company has thousands of artists and game designers on staff who could take advantage of the new capabilities.
Hiring and the road to better models
Tencent has trailed some Big Tech peers on cutting-edge large language models, but it has been retooling its approach. Former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu joined, revamped AI infrastructure and benchmarking standards, and now serves as chief AI scientist. Yao has argued against building models merely to top benchmarks, emphasizing a priority on weaving AI into products and tackling practical, real-world use cases. The hiring momentum continued with Tian Yonglong, another ex-OpenAI researcher specializing in computer vision, who joined in July and currently heads the Hunyuan group's vision-language efforts.
The investor angle
Agentic AI is having a moment. This week, Meta Platforms' agent-focused Muse app shot to the top of mobile app store charts, highlighting demand for AI that tailors content and helps with tasks like shopping or hailing a ride. That lines up with Tencent's vision inside WeChat.

According to Gary Tan of Allspring Global Investments, a portfolio manager there: "Some investors are drawing parallels between Tencent and Meta, particularly given WeChat's unique social ecosystem and its potential to support a personal AI assistant at scale." Tencent's shares rose more than 7% in Hong Kong. If Tencent can turn WeChat's reach into everyday utility, that is a lot of users to build for and potentially monetize.
