What happened
The listing hit the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos on Monday and almost instantly jammed parts of Nigeria's retail investing pipes. Minutes after the announcement, Bamboo told users on X it was trying to get its app "up and running" again. Interest wasn't just clicks: a Bamboo spokesperson said new account openings in the past week were 40% higher than the total from all of May, which had been its best month ever. After promoting the offer on social media, Cowrywise spent the morning bringing services back online following "seeing more traffic than usual," and posted on X that operations had resumed at 1.21 p.m. local time.
Details of the offer
Dangote is opening up ownership in the refinery with shares priced at 40 US cents and a minimum buy-in of $4. The prospectus lists more than 50 investment intermediaries, and the push to involve everyday Africans is already underway by tapping platforms across fintechs, mobile-phone operators, and banks. The sale is slated to close on Oct. 13, and the offering is targeting a minimum haul of $1.6 billion, implying a valuation just shy of $50 billion for the business.
Why it matters for your wallet
This isn't any old refinery. It's controlled by Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man. The facility began commercial operations in February 2024, cost $20 billion to build, and can process 700,000 barrels of crude per day.
