Diesel Tops $6 Nationwide As California Sees Extreme Local Spikes

Summary:
  • A Shell station in San Diego's Serra Mesa confirmed diesel at $9.99 a gallon on Friday and said fuel was available.
  • According to the American Automobile Association, California's statewide diesel average set a record on Friday by topping $8 a gallon, and the US average exceeded $6 per gallon earlier this week for the first time.
  • QShark's monthly fuel bill for its all‑diesel fleet jumped from about $8,200 last August to roughly $16,000 this August, and it lifted its fuel fee by around 17%.

Local extremes and statewide records

In San Diego's Serra Mesa neighborhood, a Shell station posted diesel at $9.99 a gallon, confirmed by an employee on Friday with fuel still on offer. That price is an outlier for the broader San Diego area, but it captures how stretched supply has become. On most electronic gas station marquees, three digits cap the display, so even if the real price climbs higher, the sign cannot show above $9.99. Statewide, AAA says California's average diesel price pushed past $8 on Friday, setting a new record.

The global squeeze behind the spike

This week, the national average price of diesel surpassed the $6-per-gallon threshold for the first time ever, with the war in Iran and the Russia‑Ukraine conflict disrupting energy flows. The result is a historic diesel crunch that is rippling through global supply chains, pushing US prices to records and tightening an already strained California market. West Coast diesel inventories for this time of year are the leanest since 1998, US government data show, and benchmark futures are hovering around $5 a gallon. Prices are currently highest in California, Washington and Hawaii.

Why California pays more

California regularly tops the fuel price leaderboard because it lacks pipelines bringing fuel into the state, has lost refining capacity over time, and imposes the nation's highest state‑level gasoline taxes. The state also consumes more renewable diesel made from oils and fats than anywhere else in the US, which makes the market more idiosyncratic and increases costs for refiners.

Real-world fallout for Main Street

Diesel powers moving trucks, heavy equipment and even generators, so higher prices hit fast. California mover QShark saw its monthly fuel bill jump from around $8,200 last August to about $16,000 this August, owner Vlad Kandybovich said. Even with that surge, the company raised its customer fuel fee by only about 17 percent, typically from $60 to $70, because the moving market is so competitive. "Our customers are already struggling to pay, because California's very expensive, and they're also paying gas prices," Kandybovich said.

In San Diego, arborist Jose Bedoya of Leaf It To Us said filling his diesel truck and woodchipper now runs roughly $150 a day. Most of his other gear, including around 10 chainsaws, uses gasoline. "I'm definitely not making the money I'm used to making," he said.

The company has lifted prices, especially for first‑time quotes, and some returning customers have stepped away, with annual service bills up by $300 in some cases. Consumers more broadly have dealt with years of elevated costs and are now reeling from gasoline spikes stemming from the Iran war.

What this means for your money

If you run a fuel‑intensive business, pricier diesel can chew into margins and eventually show up in customer quotes. Households are feeling it too, as energy‑driven inflation trickles through goods and services. Keep an eye on pump prices and shipping surcharges in your day‑to‑day life, because when national averages set records and California throws in four‑figure marquee shocks, the cost backdrop still has plenty of bite.

When expenses shift, thoughtful investing and risk awareness help keep your goals on track. Our CEO Jaspreet Singh is hosting a FREE live investor workshop, How to Profit From A Dollar That's Losing its Value, on September 29th. Sign up free to join him live.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
