What changed
Independent research shop Citrini Research, founded by James van Geelen, has been acquired by SemiAnalysis, a semiconductor and AI researcher. Van Geelen and SemiAnalysis chief executive Dylan Patel told Bloomberg News on Friday that the sale is done. The price wasn't known right away. Van Geelen isn't stepping aside: he'll remain Citrini's CEO for the time being. As he put it, "I'm excited about what the future holds for independent investment research."
Why this pairing makes sense
SemiAnalysis, founded in 2020, is widely tapped for research on the semiconductor sector.
Van Geelen's reach and what's next
Citrini's audience is sizable, with roughly 260,000 Substack subscribers. Earlier this year, van Geelen published "The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis," outlining a future in which AI erases white-collar jobs at such a rapid clip that the economy cannot absorb the shock. The note jolted markets and hit software stocks especially hard. He declined to comment on those plans.

What this could mean for you
Patel said the traditional approach to research has been clunky and slow, and that combining with Citrini is about scaling their work and opening it up more broadly. He also pointed to van Geelen's large finance-focused Substack following as part of an effort to make research more widely accessible.
