What Is Buzz?
Jack Dorsey wants to fix how teams talk to each other and their AI helpers at the same time.
The idea is simple: put humans and AI agents in the same room. Buzz gives you a Slack-like chat interface, but it also lets you bring in automated AI assistants that can do real work. It even includes project management tools borrowed from GitHub, so you do not have to jump between three different apps to get something done.
Dorsey posted on X that Buzz is "model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source." In plain English, that means you are not locked into one AI provider, you can host the system yourself, and anyone can look at the code.
Why the Move Now?
More startups are using AI agents to handle daily tasks. The problem? Those agents live in one tool, humans chat in another, and project tracking sits in a third.

That gets messy fast. Buzz tries to pull all three into a single workspace.
Georgios Konstantopoulos, a partner and CTO at venture firm Paradigm, made a similar argument this week. He unveiled an open-source product called Centaur that runs inside Slack or through an API. On X, he said "there's a lot of room for improvement for agents that live in Slack and can do more work than just coding for teams." He added that in a business setting, companies "want to selfhost for security and control," and they want people to use the agents right inside their existing Slack channels.
So Buzz and Centaur are going after the same gap: the messy middle where human teams and AI teams do not share a common language.
What Is Available Now
Buzz is not fully cooked yet. Dorsey called it "early stages," meaning it may not be ready for your whole team to switch over tomorrow. Still, you can grab a free desktop version for macOS, Windows, and Linux today. The source code is also posted on GitHub, so developers can poke around and even build their own version.
That open-source move is a direct challenge to Slack and to GitHub's own project management features. Instead of paying per seat or per feature, Buzz gives you the code for free and lets you decide how to run it.
Why Open Source Matters for Enterprise Adoption
Fragmentation between chat, project management, and AI tools has become a major pain point for modern teams. By offering a self-hostable, model-agnostic platform, Buzz gives companies full control over their data and AI interactions - an increasingly important requirement for security-conscious organizations. This approach mirrors a broader trend: enterprises want to adopt AI assistants without being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem, and open-source solutions provide the transparency and flexibility they need to scale safely.
