What changed last week
A post-election plunge forced a fresh look at Anthropic PBC's price tag ahead of next week's IPO roadshow. The Nasdaq 100 sank 6.4% on Thursday, shaving roughly $2.3 trillion off market value in a single day, a record move, while the Cboe Volatility Index spiked to levels last seen in April 2025.
Given that setup, bidders are discussing pricing Anthropic between $1.2 trillion and $1.3 trillion, with some eyeing $1.1 trillion, said people familiar who requested anonymity because talks are private. Anthropic declined to comment.
How the valuation story evolved
Views have swung wide in recent weeks. In early October, some investors penciled in as much as $2 trillion, people briefed on the process said. Per Bloomberg News, the tone moderated to about $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion following an October review of Anthropic's most recent results, and then reset again after Thursday's tech rout.
Politics added fuel to the debate. After Democrats swept Congress, worries grew about tighter scrutiny of data center buildouts, speeding up questions on Anthropic's IPO pricing. The competitive backdrop matters too: Anthropic overtook OpenAI in May by raising private funds at a $965 billion valuation, while Bloomberg News has reported OpenAI is now aiming for a $1.25 trillion pre money price in its current round.
How Anthropic might proceed
Anthropic and selling holders could open with a restrained deal size and valuation, then lift both if demand comes in hot. There is precedent: Cerebras Systems, a chipmaker, and Figma, a design software firm, upsized their offerings during marketing as bankers gauged interest. That said, each currently changes hands at levels far under its IPO price.
Another option is to wait. IPO filings must be public for a minimum of 15 calendar days before marketing can start. Pricing and trading often follow about a week after marketing begins, but some issuers hold off for weeks or months and refresh quarterly numbers to keep disclosures current.

What investors are saying and why it matters
HSBC Holdings Plc's chief multi asset strategist Max Kettner said around $1 trillion would be a more comfortable launch point, lowering the chance of sharp swings after trading starts. "I don't think we need the headline 'oh my god, it is a trillion dollar IPO,' because I think what's actually more important is the secondary," he told Bloomberg Radio, adding that a rip then dump pattern like the one he cited with SpaceX would be unwelcome in this market.
Morningstar's chief equity strategist Michael Field expects Anthropic to take the price the market offers rather than postpone. In his view, "the cost both physically and reputationally of delaying the IPO that might hurt the valuation more in the longer term," whereas if conditions hold, they are likely to list at "a slightly lower valuation" and move on.
The bottom line: the deal could price below earlier expectations or slip on the calendar. Either path shapes day one trading dynamics and how much near term volatility lands in your portfolio.
