Verizon fiber cut snarls flights across Newark, Philly and New York City

What happened

During construction, a fiber cable positioned beside railroad tracks used by Amtrak in New Jersey was cut, causing air-traffic chaos on Monday. The FAA initially stopped inbound flights to Newark Liberty International Airport, United's busiest international hub, and Philadelphia International Airport, and also held arrivals for New Jersey's Teterboro Airport "due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON." That Terminal Radar Approach Control center manages arrivals and departures for Newark and Philadelphia. By about 1 p.m. ET, the halt extended into New York City as the FAA also stopped arrivals to LaGuardia and JFK.

The scale of the disruption

The ripple was big. The FAA's restrictions led to hundreds of cancellations at Newark and Philadelphia. FlightAware counted more than 400 cancellations affecting Newark on Monday - over a quarter of the day's schedule - along with roughly 200 additional delays.

Nearly 400 flights in Philadelphia were delayed. As of around 1 p.m. ET, Flightradar24 tallied 67 Newark-bound flights diverted, including long hauls from Iceland, Egypt, Greece, Spain and France.

Among the reroutes: a United flight from Berlin landed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and an SAS flight from Stockholm was sent to Washington Dulles.

Response and context

Airlines made some accommodations. United waived change fees for affected travelers, and American did the same while also allowing customers to depart from other airports.

This all surfaced against a long backdrop of concerns about aging air traffic control equipment and tech headaches. Last year, the Trump administration unveiled a multibillion-dollar initiative to upgrade the nation's air traffic control infrastructure and tools.
