Sales pop as AI offsets phone slump
MediaTek's monthly sales climbed 44% in August to NT$64.2 billion, roughly $2 billion. The new AI pipeline is doing real work here, helping counter weaker demand in Android smartphones, where the company competes with Qualcomm for processor slots.
Big AI customer, bigger ambitions
The company plans to kick off mass production in the fourth quarter for its first custom AI chip built for a large US cloud provider. MediaTek has not named the buyer, and analysts say it is Google. The company forecasts its AI chip revenue will come in at roughly $2 billion this year, and it is targeting a 15% slice of an $80 billion market in the following year. To meet demand, MediaTek says it will hire aggressively. Investors are watching, and Bloomberg's graphic presents the stock on an index that starts at 100 on Dec. 31, 2025.
Cash, partners, and the trade-offs
Alphabet and Nvidia participated in MediaTek's recent convertible bond sale, with Nvidia purchasing as much as $3.5 billion. Bloomberg Intelligence's Charles Shum says that level of financing cuts funding risk for MediaTek's AI ASIC buildout and covers a large chunk of the $5 billion framework approved on July 31, which is intended to lock in supply and expand from standalone chips to complete systems. He adds that being able to tap Nvidia tech - examples include NVLink Fusion - could simplify integrating MediaTek's custom AI components into Nvidia-centric data centers, potentially strengthening its position versus Broadcom and Marvell.
The catch is neutrality. MediaTek has not disclosed its flagship ASIC customer, though reports tie it to Google's TPU program, which competes with Nvidia. With Nvidia as a major financier, some hyperscalers that want distance from Nvidia may be less eager.

MediaTek and Nvidia already work together in PCs, with MediaTek supporting Nvidia's push into laptops via the RTX Spark effort.
Why this matters for your money
If MediaTek shows it can deliver custom AI silicon at scale, a shift away from phone chips and into data center hardware could reshape its growth trajectory. The near-term checks: does fourth quarter production for the unnamed cloud client start on time, how quickly does AI revenue stack up toward the roughly $2 billion target for this year, and does Nvidia's backing help or hinder traction with hyperscalers that prize independence.
