A big upgrade at Ford's profit engine
On Thursday, Ford said it will invest $1 billion in a new paint facility at its Kentucky Truck Plant, which the company describes as its most important and most profitable site worldwide.
Paint shops are among the priciest and most critical parts of an assembly plant. Ford says the new building will take over for the existing paint shop and advance modernization across one of its key manufacturing operations.
Arriving after Washington's sharp questions
The timing lands just after a political flare-up. On Tuesday, the Trump administration publicly released a letter addressed to CEO Jim Farley that conveyed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's "profound concern" about Ford's U.S. "manufacturing integrity" and connections to Chinese companies that the administration argued could harm the automaker and the wider industry. Ford, which often notes it is the top-producing automaker in the U.S., shot back by calling the critique a "wrongheaded attempt to capture headlines."
Following Ford's lengthy rebuttal, on Wednesday the White House Rapid Response handle on X struck a warmer note, calling Ford "a GREAT American company."

Ford says it expects to break ground later this year. Asked when the new facility would be finished, a Ford spokesman had no immediate comment. The company added that this is the latest move following roughly $4 billion in announced investments tied to its Kentucky operations in recent years.
"These investments demonstrate our confidence in Kentucky's workforce, our commitment to American manufacturing, and our belief that the future of mobility and energy will be built right here in the United States," Farley said. For everyday investors, the takeaway is that Ford is doubling down on its most important and most profitable factory globally, which turns out F-250 through F-550 Super Duty models alongside the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, all while it manages political scrutiny - a mix that can shape the company's cash flow and the rate of its spending.
