What BI saw
Bloomberg Intelligence says the yen's reputation as a safety valve has sprung back as investors turned defensive across asset classes. Added pressure on the euro from France's fiscal and social challenges strengthens the case for yen firmness, according to the team.
Levels on the radar
BI highlights two key pairs where yen strength could show up. Euro yen could extend below 175, and dollar yen may slide under 155, putting those thresholds in focus for FX traders.
Policy signals to watch
The immediate outlook remains unclear because it's not yet known how the Federal Reserve will proceed, and the midterm elections add to the fog. BI also highlights that one element is still absent: the Bank of Japan turning more hawkish at its Oct. 30 meeting. "The international context may have turned compellingly yen bullish, but confirmation of a more-hawkish BOJ stance into 2027 would complete the view," said Audrey Childe-Freeman, BI's chief FX strategist. She added that defensive currency positioning has picked up again after a run of risk-off sessions.

Why it matters for your portfolio
In plain English: BI sees the yen benefiting from renewed caution, euro pressure tied to France, and a watch list that includes euro yen near 175 and dollar yen near 155. The bottom line is that upcoming policy signals, especially the Bank of Japan's Oct. 30 meeting, could shape whether this yen bid persists.
