Europe is set for a mild September, which should trim heating needs just as countries work to rebuild gas inventories for winter. Government and private forecasters see the unusual warmth extending into next week.
According to Vaisala, average temperatures will run 3C to 7C above normal, most notably across the Balkans, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and France. In southern France, Météo-France sees daytime highs topping 35C, or 95F, through the weekend.
An Atlantic system should bring a short, cooler and stormier interlude next week. Models and meteorologists expect it to fade quickly, and rebuilding high pressure should leave large parts of Europe on the warmer and drier side for much of the month.
"Just slight below-normal potential," said William Henneberg, a meteorologist with Commodity Weather Group. "And then right back to the warmer than normal side of things."
A milder month gives Europe more room to replenish natural gas before winter. Storage stands at roughly 65% of capacity, the weakest level for this point in the season since records began in 2009.

At the same time, clashes between the US and Iran are propelling benchmark gas prices close to their highest levels since 2023 as faith in shipments through the Strait of Hormuz wanes. With Europe competing with global buyers for limited supply, those higher prices may be necessary to attract enough LNG cargoes.
September's pattern is unlikely to alleviate drought or persistent navigation worries on the Rhine or Danube, according to Henneberg. He said Rhine levels have improved recently but expects few gains in the weeks ahead. The Danube outlook is worse, even with some rainfall possible mid-month. "Don't expect much aid there either as we move into the typical low points of the season," he said.
Wind generation should get an early boost under low pressure over northern Europe, then fade as high pressure returns over western Europe by mid-month. MetDesk meteorologist Daniel Gardner-Declaudure expects strong wind generation this week across the UK, Germany, the Benelux countries, and Poland. Windy conditions are seen continuing next week before tapering toward month-end, according to MetDesk's longer-term analysis.
Solar output is expected to dip next week as storm systems move through, then return to normal later in the month, with sunnier skies boosting production across the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and the Benelux countries.
A warmer September can delay heating demand and give storage a little more breathing room, but inventories sit around 65% and benchmark gas prices are being shaped by US-Iran tensions and shipping risks around the Strait of Hormuz. Europe may also need elevated prices to compete for LNG.
