Even though Nvidia is one of the most valuable companies globally, it does not provide free meals in its cafeterias. The company's on-site dining options are subsidized, meaning Nvidia covers a portion of the meal costs. While coffee is provided at no charge, certain bottled drinks and items from on-site cafés require payment.
Why No Free Food?
Former employees say the policy comes straight from the top. One former employee quoted Jensen's philosophy, stating: "Philosophically, I think Jensen has a general belief about separation of pleasure and work," and added that the workplace lacked "ping-pong tables, a company gym, massages-on-request, or stuff like that."
The company's culture also prizes frugality. "Being frugal is deeply rooted in Nvidia's DNA," said a third former employee. "Traditionally, hardware companies have always been operating at very thin margins, far below what software companies were doing."

Nvidia's journey from a scrappy startup in 1993 to a leading AI powerhouse has been marked by a relentless focus on innovation. Its early days, operating on razor-thin margins in the competitive graphics chip market, ingrained a culture of frugality that persists today. Despite the lack of lavish perks, Nvidia attracts top talent because of its cutting-edge work in AI and graphics. Employees often prioritize the excitement of their projects over free meals, as highlighted by former staff.
The company's success shows that high employee satisfaction can come from meaningful work rather than free snacks.
A second former employee explained the contrast: "Other workplaces where everything is free are implicitly trying to coax employees into staying in the office as much as possible - Nvidia has the exact opposite philosophy."
A Changing Industry
Unlike Nvidia, Google still provides chef-cooked meals and snack-filled microkitchens. Meta is said to be upgrading its own microkitchens as employee morale faces challenges. Both Amazon and Apple do not provide free meals either.
Across Big Tech, firms are scaling back on perks during this push for efficiency. As companies reassess workplace benefits amid AI advancements and cost-saving measures, Nvidia's minimal perk policy no longer seems so unusual.
The food policy doesn't appear to bother Nvidia employees. "There was so much exciting work going on that these types of things were really not an issue," a fourth former employee said. "Food would be your last concern as long as you could get it ASAP and return to your desk."
Nvidia did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
