The upgrade and the math
Stifel's Brad Reback bumped Microsoft to buy and took his target up to $575, roughly in line with the Street's average. That level sits almost 16% above Tuesday's $498 finish. With skeptics all but gone, 68 analysts now rate the stock a buy, covering about 96% of firms tracked by Bloomberg. Three others are at hold, and none recommend selling.
Why Stifel changed its view
Reback wrote that he's "increasingly comfortable" Microsoft can keep revenue expanding in the mid to upper teens as its work with open weight models strengthens an LLM agnostic approach. He also pointed to "operational efficiencies" that back steady operating margins, and said strong cash generation "should limit the company's need for outside financing."
What the market has already done and what investors are debating
Even after a 1.3% move on Wednesday, Microsoft's year-to-date increase remains under 5%, lagging the Nasdaq 100's 21% advance. Within the Magnificent Seven, only Tesla has fared worse, falling 15% in 2026, while the overall group is up 11%. Despite broad analyst enthusiasm, the stock has cooled as investors weigh Microsoft's heavy AI spending and hash out how AI reshapes legacy software businesses.
However, the company's late July blowout report eased some of those worries by posting the quickest cloud-computing expansion in four years. The shares notched their biggest single-day gain since October 2008 after that print. Stifel said Microsoft "clearly turned the corner" with that report, setting up momentum to continue in the year's back half.

What this means for your portfolio
Between a near-consensus buy view, a target that's close to 16% above the latest close, and a stock that has lagged big-tech peers, the setup is clear: sentiment is strong, but execution on AI and cloud will likely drive what happens next. The late July surge and Stifel's language about momentum into the second half show how quickly the narrative can flip when growth accelerates.
