What the exchange is planning
Guangzhou Futures Exchange is working toward launching lithium hydroxide futures as early as this year, according to people with knowledge who asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak publicly. The schedule could shift and will hinge on regulatory signoff. GFEX did not respond to requests for comment.
How the contracts would work and why they matter
These would be physically settled contracts, meaning some trades could end with actual deliveries rather than cash differences. Lithium hydroxide is a key input for electric vehicle batteries and is commonly used in higher nickel chemistries, while lithium carbonate can be used across a wider set of battery types. The goal is more transparent pricing and a practical hedge for companies exposed to different battery materials.
Market context and logistics
Earlier this year, China moved into net importer status for lithium hydroxide, a change tied in part to a widening gap between domestic and international prices. Hydroxide also has a relatively short usable life, roughly a year or under, which could mean tighter handling and inspection standards in warehouses linked to the contracts.

What this could mean for your portfolio
GFEX introduced lithium carbonate futures in 2023, and activity has climbed among both investors and industry users since launch, with liquidity improving over time. China aims to play a bigger role in setting the costs of key raw inputs essential to the energy transition. In China, those carbonate contracts have been some of the wildest movers in commodity markets, and swift swings in supply and demand have led to abrupt price jumps that have caused the exchange to intervene on multiple occasions.
