What Fahnbulleh said and why it matters
The pledge vs what's happened so far
In 2024, Labour ran on a pledge that, over time, its clean-energy program would lower household expenses by up to £300 ($397) annually. Instead, bills have gone up since the party took office. The government's pitch remains that building more homegrown renewables ultimately lowers prices by limiting exposure to wild swings in global gas markets.
Targets, gas, and what counts as success
Fahnbulleh did not explicitly recommit to the goal set under Ed Miliband for clean sources to supply at least 95% of Britain's electricity by 2030. Asked if that figure was still firm or whether more gas could be on the system and the plan still be judged a success, she said targets are meant to "shift investment" and "shift the system." Her own yardstick: "For me, success is, we maintain the level of investment." She also flagged unresolved hurdles around the grid, connections and planning.

The grid bill and who pays it
Britain requires additional transmission lines to connect growing volumes of renewable generation and carry that electricity nationwide. Regulator Ofgem says transmission owners need to boost spending roughly fourfold to about £70 billion from 2025 through 2031 to stay consistent with the government's 2030 Clean Power goal. As Fahnbulleh put it, "We're asking consumers to do that investment and to pay the cost of that at a time when people are under pressure, and that is a big ask." For households, the takeaway is simple: the transition aims to cut exposure to gas price shocks, but the grid work comes first and lands on bills before the savings show up.
