Record cash and where it came from
The GOP's lead Senate super PAC closed a blockbuster quarter sitting on more than $155 million in cash, per a Thursday filing. The Senate Leadership Fund collected $272.9 million from July through September, of which $209.7 million came from donors.
A huge chunk arrived courtesy of Elon Musk. In September, he funneled $158 million via a related Texas committee backing Republican Ken Paxton, and he did so with two checks - $75 million and $83 million - that rank among the largest political donations ever.
How it stacks up against Democrats and SLF's own history
Musk's September total by itself topped what Senate Majority PAC says it raised across the entire third quarter. The Democratic group reported a record $151 million for the period and said it ended September holding $111.8 million in cash - a figure it likewise described as a third-quarter record. Its FEC reports were not yet available.
SLF's surge blew past its own highs. In 2024, its third-quarter intake was just under $116 million, and in 2022 it totaled $111 million. According to CNBC's review of filings, in 2020 - when SLF filed monthly - it pulled in around $157 million from July through September, and its previous best quarter came to about $216 million during the last three months of 2020.

Where the money is moving
The cash cushion gives Republicans breathing room as they try to hold a 53-seat Senate majority on a map that has tilted more defensive late in the cycle. This month, SLF halted further ads in perennial battleground North Carolina - after laying out more than $30 million there, per AdImpact - then pivoted its spending to Kansas, where Republican Sen. Roger Marshall is unexpectedly being challenged by Democrat Adam Hamilton.
In Nebraska, The Wall Street Journal reported that SLF is putting $15 million behind Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts, with $7 million routed through the affiliated Cornhusker Majority. In 2024, Nebraska went for Trump by more than 20 percentage points.
According to an FEC filing, Paxton raised $10.2 million.
