What just hit chips
Semiconductor stocks have been hammered, with the sector's flagship index sliding 12% over six sessions and roughly $1 trillion in value wiped out. Concerns about AI spending trends and fiercer global competition are weighing on sentiment, and stretched valuations plus higher rates are adding fuel to the volatility.
Where the dip buyers showed up
Money is still chasing the selloff. VanEck Semiconductor (SMH) has attracted more than $430 million in the last three sessions, a pace that would mark its best week of inflows since the beginning of September, Bloomberg reports. Bolder traders went for leverage: about $3.8 billion has flowed into Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X (SOXL), putting the $19 billion fund on track for its biggest inflow week ever, despite SOXL dropping nearly 21% this week.
How traders are playing it
She added, "While the long-term demand outlook remains strong, semiconductor ETFs have become increasingly popular vehicles for tactical trading, with investors buying into weakness and taking profits during rallies." Retail investors, in particular, have leaned into dip-buying during stress, wagering on a rebound similar to earlier in the year. For those who stuck with it, the scorecard is hard to ignore: SMH is up 57% in 2026, while SOXL has jumped 163%. "Semis corrective behavior is re-accelerating again, but that hasn't quite put a lid on the demand for dip buying with leverage," said Todd Sohn, Baird Strategas's chief ETF strategist.
