Summary:
  • The Carolina Panthers and Bank of America have agreed to extend their stadium naming-rights deal as part of a $1.3 billion plan that includes major renovations.
  • Originally called Ericsson Stadium when it debuted in 1996, the venue's naming rights were acquired by Bank of America in 2004 as part of a long-term contract.
  • Upgrades will include new indoor-outdoor gathering spaces, a social patio, larger scoreboards, and a crown-shaped light feature on the building's exterior.

A Partnership That Keeps Growing

Under this contract, the venue will continue to be called "The Bank" for years to come, and work on the 30-year-old facility is set to commence.

The partnership between the financial institution and the Panthers stretches to the franchise's inception in the early 1990s, when ex-Bank of America CEO Hugh McColl was instrumental in bringing an NFL expansion team to the Carolinas.

Tepper, the owner and chairman of Tepper Sports & Entertainment - the organization that operates the Panthers - commented, "The long-term extension with Bank of America reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to the Carolinas. For over three decades, Bank of America Stadium has helped create lasting memories for our fans, and we're excited for them to see what's ahead. Our goal is to create experiences that enhance the passion and energy of the region while transforming this corridor into a weekend destination for world-class sports, entertainment and community events."

Brian Moynihan, chair and CEO of Bank of America, added, "Over the years, Bank of America's partnership with the Carolina Panthers has become one of the most enduring in professional sports. With nearly 20,000 teammates and a local history dating back to 1874, our ties to Charlotte run deep, and so does our commitment to its continued growth. The extension recognizes Bank of America Stadium's important role of attracting millions of visitors, driving economic opportunity and showcasing Charlotte and the Carolinas."

What the $1.3 Billion Buys

The planned upgrades for the stadium comprise larger indoor-outdoor social areas on every level, a 500-level social patio offering panoramic vistas of Uptown Charlotte, bigger and more advanced scoreboards and screens, improved seating choices, luxury amenities, and technology aimed at delivering a more integrated and tailored fan experience.

Artistic concepts further show a refined look for the outside of the stadium, featuring enhanced finishes and a distinctive glowing crown that is set to join the Charlotte skyline. Details in the design will be inspired by the residents, locations, and geography of the Carolinas, resulting in areas that reflect a genuine local character.

This past season, the Panthers claimed the NFC South title, then came close to pulling off a major upset at home against the Los Angeles Rams but fell just short. Quarterback Bryce Young is heading into his fourth year, and the Panthers aim to qualify for the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since they did so annually from 2013 through 2015.
