Alphabet Sees Cloud Revenue Soar 82% in Strong AI-Driven Quarter

Summary:
  • Google Cloud revenue surged 82% to $24.8 billion, beating analyst estimates of $22.46 billion.
  • Alphabet's quarterly profit soared to $112.1 billion, up from $28.1 billion a year earlier.
  • The company's contracted-but-not-yet-invoiced work backlog now stands at $514 billion, signaling sustained enterprise demand.

Cloud Growth Silences the Skeptics

Alphabet has been spending like crazy on artificial intelligence. This year alone, the company plans to pour between $180 billion and $190 billion into data centers, chips, and infrastructure. That kind of money makes investors nervous. They want to know when they will see a return.

Then Google Cloud reported its latest numbers.

And it was a sharp acceleration from last quarter's 63% growth rate, which came in at $20 billion.

The business is not just growing. The pace of growth is accelerating.

What is driving it? Companies are signing up for Google's enterprise AI tools and renting its AI computing power. The backlog of work that has been contracted but not yet invoiced now sits at $514 billion. That number gives a good sense of where future revenue is coming from.

The firm's spending on data centers and hardware demonstrates its dedication to AI. Analysts have noted that such a large backlog indicates sustained demand for cloud and AI services from enterprises, which justifies the heavy upfront investment.

This surge in cloud revenue comes as enterprises increasingly adopt AI-driven solutions for their operations. Google's investment in custom TPU chips and its AI platform Vertex AI have attracted major clients. The company's aggressive expansion of data centers globally underscores its bet that AI demand will continue to accelerate, and the latest figures suggest that bet is paying off.

In the previous quarter, Google Cloud had reported 63% growth to $20 billion, making this quarter's 82% increase a notable acceleration. The consistent double-digit growth across Alphabet's core advertising business further underscores the company's healthy financial position as it pours billions into AI infrastructure.

The Rest of Alphabet Is Humming Along Too

Google Cloud was the star, but the whole company had a strong quarter. That marks 12 straight quarters of double-digit revenue growth.

The core advertising business, listed as Google Services, grew 15% to $94.5 billion.

Meanwhile, Google's AI chatbot Gemini now has 950 million monthly active users, up from 750 million in the fourth quarter of last year. That is a lot of people poking around with AI, and it shows the company is getting traction beyond its cloud business.

What It Means for Investors

The big question on every analyst's mind during the earnings call: When does all this AI spending actually pay off? CEO Sundar Pichai gave a direct answer.

Pichai said, "Our AI investments are redefining what's possible across every part of our business." He added, "We are seeing strong demand indicators, including long-term deals." Pichai also stated, "If anything, the dynamics look healthier than where we were about a year ago."

The cloud numbers showed that the money is not just being burned. It is being spent on something customers actually want.
