What Wizz told staff
Wizz told employees that "These decisions have not been taken lightly but are necessary to ensure the business remains financially sustainable, protects long-term competitiveness, and aligns our operation with the current demand and cost environment." The email also said the airline has faced a "particularly challenging operating environment this year, driven by geopolitical instability, operational uncertainty and an unprecedented rise in fuel prices." A company spokesman said he could not comment on internal matters.
How the process will work
The airline invited interested crew to submit applications by the end of day Friday and said it will notify by Tuesday who will receive the packages. A spokesperson for the British Airline Pilots' Association said Wizz is collecting expressions of interest from first officers at Luton to depart on voluntary enhanced terms by the beginning of next month. Those selected would leave on Nov 1. The offer comprises statutory redundancy pay, a further compensation amount equivalent to two weeks' salary, and pay provided in place of serving notice.

Why it matters for your portfolio
Wizz is cutting capacity through the slower winter season and managing higher fuel costs linked to the Middle East conflict, a squeeze that has pushed many carriers to raise fares and adjust schedules. London Luton is the airline's primary UK base and home to its headquarters, so any staffing changes there feed directly into core operations and cost control. The company has also been repositioning aircraft, pulling two of its new extra long range Airbus jets from London Gatwick earlier this year and parking them in Poland. Investors watching Wizz's winter schedule and staffing moves will see clearer signals on cost discipline and capacity planning as fuel expenses stay elevated.
