GoPro to Merge With Starman Optical and Move Into AI and Defense

Summary:
  • On Tuesday, GoPro announced it expects to complete a definitive merger agreement with the private photonics company Starman Optical and to expand its focus to the AI data-center and defense arenas.
  • Investors are set to receive $285 million in cash - equivalent to $1.14 per share - and the company's shares will continue to trade on the Nasdaq; the stock closed up 40% on the day of the news.
  • The company anticipates paying down $92 million of debt at closing and says it will continue supporting its current products along with its subscription and cloud platform.

The deal and what the company says

GoPro said it plans to finalize a binding combination with Starman Optical, the privately held photonics firm, while redirecting its strategy toward AI data centers and defense. CEO Nicholas Woodman said, "We expect this merger to enable GoPro to grow across consumer, commercial and defense markets as a leading American imaging and optical solutions company, addressing important areas of national security related to cameras, optics and AI infrastructure." The company declined to share more details beyond the release.

Shareholder impact and market moves

As part of the transaction, GoPro said shareholders will receive $285 million in cash - amounting to $1.14 per share - and that its common stock will continue to be listed on the Nasdaq. The stock finished the day up 40% after the announcement. GoPro added that the $92 million it owes will be retired at closing.

Earlier this summer, BlackRock reported holding a 6.4% position. GoPro, which came public at $38 per share in 2014, has had a hard time regaining investor trust and was hovering near penny-stock levels until only a few days back.

Wider context and a company promise

According to the company, it "will continue to fully support its existing consumer products and its subscription and cloud platform while investing in growth and a broader, diversified product roadmap." It is not alone chasing AI momentum. In April, retailer Allbirds said it would shift focus from producing its sustainable shoes to AI compute and hardware, rebranding as Smartbird. "People always roll their eyes when it's something they don't understand," Smartbird CEO Nadia Carlsten said on CNBC's The Exchange last week, adding, "It's about building a product, building a pipeline of customers, making sure that the world understands what it is that you're building, getting customers to sign contracts to actually sell them your product and so on."

Why it matters for your money

If a household name known for action cameras can find fresh oxygen in AI, it shows how powerful the theme has become for re-rating beaten-down brands. Cash to shareholders, debt getting cleared, and a continued Nasdaq listing are all tangible markers to watch as this plays out. The next tell: whether new AI and defense work can translate into steadier revenue on top of GoPro's existing consumer business.

America Is Running Out of Debt Buyers. Treasury Bills Are the Government's Fix
  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
  • Investors, banks, and foreign countries are all lending less to the U.S., so starting September 9 the government plans to sell more short-term treasury bills and use that cash to buy back its long-term debt.
  • Government interest rates set the floor for your mortgage, your car loan, and your credit card, and short-term Treasury ETFs like SGOV are one way investors are playing it.

What a Tariff Dividend Means for Your Money
  • A "tariff dividend" is the idea of taking money the government collects from tariffs and paying some of it back to citizens.
  • To judge the idea, you first need to know what a tariff is: a tax on imported goods, usually paid by the companies bringing them in.
  • Tariffs ripple through prices, businesses, and your investments, so the smart move is understanding those ripples, not just the headline.

No Tax on Overtime: How Overtime Pay Is Taxed
  • "No tax on overtime" refers to a tax break that lets certain workers deduct some overtime pay, lowering the income they get taxed on.
  • A deduction does not mean overtime is truly tax-free. It means part of that pay is subtracted before your tax is figured.
  • The bigger money lesson: how you earn money changes how it is taxed, and investors often get the friendliest treatment of all.

Reading the Silver Price Forecast for 2026
  • Nobody can honestly promise a specific silver price for 2026. Any exact number is a guess, so treat forecasts as opinions, not facts.
  • Silver is unusual because it is both a precious metal and an industrial metal, so its price answers to two very different forces.
  • Instead of chasing a forecast, learn the drivers - inflation, interest rates, recession fear, and industrial demand - so you can judge any prediction yourself.
