What JetBlue just reported
JetBlue's third quarter red ink deepened to $257 million, wider than the $143 million loss a year ago. Fuel was a major swing factor, with the bill up 61% to $868 million.
By quarter-end, the company held $2.2 billion in liquidity. It also reported an unencumbered asset base of $7 billion, of which $2.8 billion is tied to aircraft and engines. Total debt stood at $8.4 billion as of Sept. 30.
JetBlue last posted a full-year profit in 2019.
Why the stock ripped anyway
After hitting a new low Monday, the stock rebounded nearly 19% early Tuesday as executives issued an upbeat forecast for a return to profitability.
CFO Ursula Hurley added, "Importantly, we believe we have the liquidity and financing options to create a strong bridge to at least $1 EPS and positive free cash flow in 2028," emphasizing a focus on cost discipline and capital management.

Fares, revenue mix, and the turnaround plan
According to JetBlue, revenue per available seat mile - defined as operating revenue for every seat flown one mile - could climb as high as 22% in Q4. That would put the full-year increase in a 13.5% to 14.5% range. Demand has held up even with pricier tickets, with average fares up more than 19% to $245.11, versus $205.67 a year earlier.
Midway through a multiyear turnaround aimed at trimming costs and boosting revenue, the carrier is putting money into premium cabins, including a new domestic first class offering now available for purchase. Industrywide, higher fuel costs have pressured profits, and JetBlue is also competing against larger rivals.
The legal backdrop and the investor takeaway
Regulatory pushback has reshaped the strategy. A judge blocked JetBlue's bid for Spirit Airlines on antitrust grounds, and another judge halted its regional partnership with American Airlines that the companies said would help in the congested Northeast. JetBlue currently maintains a partnership with United Airlines.
The bottom line: management is mapping a path back to profitability while contending with higher fuel, larger losses, and meaningful leverage, balanced by stronger unit revenue and higher fares.
