What happened
Applied Materials said Monday it is increasing its investment in BE Semiconductor Industries NV, or Besi, and expects to hold around 20% of the Dutch firm's shares. Applied began its stake in April of last year at 9% and characterized the enlarged position as a long term holding.
Why Applied is leaning in
The company pointed to Besi's growing importance in energy efficient AI computing and to a collaboration that already spans six years. Besi also recently became part of Applied's new EPIC Center, a chip equipment research hub, and Applied signaled plans to deepen the partnership.
The guardrails on ownership
Applied framed the move as strategic rather than a step toward a takeover. It stated, "Applied currently has no intention to increase its investment in Besi beyond approximately 20%, and Applied does not intend to seek board representation at Besi."
Context on competition
Besi last week dismissed worries that ASML is turning into a rival in hybrid bonding. That is Besi's specialty, a packaging technique used to assemble chips in ways that enhance performance for AI workloads.

What this means for your portfolio
The planned stake increase ties Applied more closely to Besi's hybrid bonding roadmap and to AI hardware demand, while setting clear limits on ownership and governance. For holders of either stock, the message is steady collaboration, a defined ceiling near 20%, and no board seat pursuit alongside a stated long term posture.
