Trump tells Iran 'not to get cute' as Pickaxe Mountain activity picks up

Summary:
  • President Donald Trump warned Iran that "we will have to hit them very hard" over fresh activity at the suspected nuclear site known as Pickaxe Mountain.
  • A CSIS review of satellite images shows more road movement there in 2026 than ever before and a clear pickup in construction, shifting from digging to likely interior work and exterior fortification.
  • Oil edged higher as tensions flared, with Brent up 0.9% to $102.10 and U.S. WTI up 1% to $97.01 on Thursday morning.

What Trump said and why this site is in the spotlight

Speaking at a midterm Republican convention on Wednesday, Donald Trump said, "We notice there's a little activity at Pickaxe. I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard." He later told reporters he did not expect the U.S.-Iran war to wind down before November's midterm elections, adding, "I think the war will end immediately after the election because they can't hold out any longer." He has previously threatened to strike the underground tunnel network known in Farsi as Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La.

Pickaxe Mountain sits near Iran's badly damaged Natanz uranium enrichment site and is viewed as one of the remaining pieces of Tehran's nuclear program, raising worries in Washington that Iran could try to rebuild capabilities there.

What the new imagery shows

The Center for Strategic and International Studies published an analysis Wednesday saying 2026 has seen the most road activity at Pickaxe Mountain in the site's history and "a clear surge" in building work. CSIS said recent images suggest the focus has moved away from heavy excavation to what looks like interior construction along with ongoing reinforcement on the outside. The think tank called the bustle at a location about two kilometers, or 1.2 miles, from the older Natanz complex "suspicious." It also said it could neither verify nor dismiss claims that centrifuges have been relocated into the mountain.

Iran has repeatedly said it is not pursuing nuclear weapons. A spokesperson for Iran's Embassy in London could not be reached right away to answer a CNBC request for comment.

The broader clash and the oil read

In June 2025, three Iranian nuclear facilities - Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan - were hit by U.S. forces, an action that, according to American officials at the time, materially slowed Tehran's route to a weapon. This week, Iran stated it fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan and also targeted 10 ships in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that normally handles about 20% of global oil flows.

Earlier in the week, U.S. Central Command reported the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers, saying the action followed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy warship on two consecutive days. The flurry of tanker incidents around Hormuz, along with intensifying battles between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, has traders bracing for potential supply snags.

On Thursday morning, international benchmark Brent crude futures for November delivery were up 0.9% at $102.10 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures gained 1% to $97.01.

What this could mean for your money

Trump later said some near term consumer pain in the U.S. would be worth it to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. ING's Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey wrote Thursday that whether this oil rally sticks or fizzles will "largely" come down to how much China buys. If the conflict starts interrupting flows, they warned, the market could tighten more quickly.

Translation for your wallet: prices at the pump and energy-sensitive costs can swing when Hormuz headlines heat up. Keeping an eye on crude moves, Chinese demand signals, and any confirmed disruption through the strait can help you understand where inflation pressure might show up next.

Keeping a long term focus helps you preserve buying power and pursue growth. Our CEO Jaspreet Singh is hosting a FREE live investor workshop, How to Profit From A Dollar That's Losing its Value, on September 29th. Sign up free to join him live.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet
  • The US national debt crossed $40 trillion in 2026 and is growing faster than the economy. The debt to GDP ratio now sits at 125%, the highest outside the pandemic and higher than World War II.
  • On September 9, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rolled out an emergency plan for the government to lend money to itself. Ray Dalio now says the dollar has roughly three years before real pain.
  • Empires rarely default. They debase. Since 1971, median household income grew about 8x while houses grew 17x and the S&P 500 grew 360x, so investors got richer while workers fell behind.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.
  • The tradeoff is real: you give up some upside, and the two key numbers to check are maximum drawdown and correlation to the market.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.
  • The Fed is stuck between high inflation and a weak job market, and fixing one makes the other worse.
  • Higher rates also reprice roughly a third of America's $40 trillion national debt this year, which is why Washington wants cuts so badly.

  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
  • Investors, banks, and foreign countries are all lending less to the U.S., so starting September 9 the government plans to sell more short-term treasury bills and use that cash to buy back its long-term debt.
