Port of Los Angeles Logs Busiest Three Months Ever Amid Reroutes

Summary:
  • LA just posted its most active three-month period ever, with an ahead-of-schedule peak stretching into August.
  • Workers at the busiest US container gateway handled a combined 2.9 million-plus boxes across June, July, and August, with August alone clearing above 955,000.
  • Shippers are juggling China storm delays, Panama Canal constraints, tariff-driven route shifts, and higher freight bills linked to the Iran war and the de facto closure of Hormuz.

What happened this summer

The Port of Los Angeles strung together its strongest June-to-August run in history as the usual peak arrived early and never really let up. Dockworkers at the nation's busiest container gateway moved a cumulative total north of 2.9 million units in those three months, the highest three-month tally the port has ever posted.

"We've put together an exceptionally strong summer," said Executive Director Gene Seroka. "September is shaping up to be another strong month, and Los Angeles is well positioned to respond as global trade patterns continue to evolve."

Why volumes stayed high

Importers spent the summer working around a messy global backdrop: storms in China that slowed major airports and container hubs, restrictions on transits through the Panama Canal, and tariff-driven route changes following policies under President Donald Trump. Additionally, shipping expenses have been elevated because of the Iran war and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Seroka noted that even with attractive rates from Asia to the East Coast, many cargo owners are still opting for Los Angeles because of its rail connectivity and overall efficiency.

The August snapshot

August throughput topped 955,000 containers, roughly in line with the same month a year ago. Imports accounted for about 500,000 TEUs, a notch above July and nearly 7% higher than the five-year August average. Exports totaled roughly 115,500 containers, down 9% from last August, while empties increased about 4% to a little over 340,000. Separately, Drewry's World Container Index shows the spot price for a 40-foot box has pushed past $7,000, the highest since 2024.

The NRF view and what it means for your wallet

The National Retail Federation now expects import volumes across the country to stay strong in September before easing through the remainder of 2026, the Global Port Tracker reports. As NRF's Jonathan Gold put it, "We thought the peak season would be mostly behind us by now, but that's not the case." He added that part of the change from earlier summer patterns reflects vessel delays from severe weather in China and a degree of rerouting that steers ships past the Panama Canal because of possible drought conditions.

When logistics shift, sticking to a thoughtful investment plan keeps your finances resilient. Our CEO Jaspreet Singh is hosting a FREE live investor workshop, How to Profit From A Dollar That's Losing its Value, on September 29th. Sign up free to join him live.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.

  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.

  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
