Scatec's next chapter: Europe with batteries
Scatec wants to more than double its global power footprint by 2028, targeting 11 GW versus about 3 GW in operation or under construction today. The new push includes a rapid buildout in Romania and a broader expansion of storage assets. After years of prioritizing Africa and other emerging markets with big unmet demand and strong renewable resources, the company now sees Europe as fertile ground thanks to grids that are struggling to absorb surging wind and solar output. That grid tension is creating a bigger role for batteries, opening new lanes for clean power developers.
Romania shows how the playbook works
Romania is the test case. Scatec is building a mix of wind, solar and batteries totaling around 350 MW there, with production expected to begin next year, Pilskog said in Bucharest. Romania now requires new renewable projects to include energy storage, which helps soak up excess generation and stabilize the system.
Storage scale-up and momentum in Africa
Across the portfolio, Scatec expects storage capacity to jump four to five times to 6 to 7 GWh by 2028. As Pilskog put it: "We can now build out renewable projects that are very grid-friendly or actually supporting the grid and this is a completely new situation relative to only a couple of years back in time." Pairing generation with batteries broadens access to European markets that intermittent solar and wind struggled to crack.
Within the coming six months, the company says it will hit the "financial completion stage" for three sizable projects in Egypt, after which construction will begin. By completing Africa's largest solar-and-battery hybrid, the company is expected to help Egypt avoid fossil-fuel import expenses measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

What this means for your portfolio
The takeaway is simple: projects that combine renewables with storage are gaining traction where grids are feeling the strain, and in places like Romania where storage is required. That can influence where developers build next and which technologies attract capital. For your money, it is a reminder to watch where the real bottlenecks are and who is solving them.
