Parti Islam Se-Malaysia, the party at the helm of the main opposition bloc, is pressing the federal government to review current gambling licenses and halt fresh approvals, describing it as part of its push against social problems. At its Saturday AGM in Kelantan, PAS backed resolutions to hand states the authority to decide on gambling licenses and to have states tighten local council rules on gambling.
PAS leads the Perikatan Nasional coalition, has 43 members of Parliament, and runs four state governments - Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis. It recently took a hit in court when the Federal Court rejected the Kedah state government's appeal, leaving in place a decision that overturned Kedah's ban on the non-renewal of business licenses for lottery outlets.
From the same AGM, PAS supported a resolution asking the federal government to set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the so-called corporate mafia issue that involves law enforcement agencies. It is a signal the party wants scrutiny of how power is wielded behind the scenes.
