Women Drove Almost All of August's Job Gains

Summary:
  • Women filled 158,000 of the 162,000 jobs added in August, per a CNBC read of fresh BLS data.
  • Men added 4,000 net jobs, making their contribution nearly 40 times smaller than women's.
  • Over the past year, employed women rose by more than 870,000 while employed men fell by nearly 1.5 million; women's unemployment was 3.9% in August versus 4.4% for men.

What the data shows

Women were responsible for nearly the entire August payroll gain, taking 158,000 of the 162,000 jobs added, according to CNBC's analysis of Friday's Bureau of Labor Statistics release. Men accounted for the remaining 4,000. An advocacy group on the left, the Economic Security Project, was the first to flag the split in the data.

Laura Ullrich, who leads the economics function at the Indeed Hiring Lab, said that surge drove the gap between women's and men's jobs to a record. "We are in the midst of a shift," Ullrich said. "It is changing right before our eyes."

Women's strength also helped the headline nonfarm payrolls number top forecasts by a wide margin. August's 162,000 increase was more than triple what economists expected.

Where the gains came from

The sector mix mattered. Healthcare, a steady engine of job growth for more than a year, kept expanding in August. Women make up upwards of four in five workers in that industry.

Local government and education also rebounded, adding 42,000 positions, or about one quarter of the month's net increase. Women hold close to three quarters of roles tied to education, training, and libraries.

Ullrich added that women's hiring momentum showed up even in areas often labeled male dominated, including manufacturing.

The fine print and why it matters for your money

On a seasonally adjusted basis versus a year earlier, the number of employed women rose by more than 870,000, while employed men fell by nearly 1.5 million. In August, the women's unemployment rate was 3.9%, down 0.4 percentage points from a year before. The men's rate climbed to 4.4%, matching where it stood in August 2025.

Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, cautioned that month to month gender splits are choppy and argued the better lens is longer term. Those trends, she said, point to a "mom-cession," a term used when mothers of young children leave the workforce.

Ullrich also pointed to the types of roles driving the gains. Since women typically earn less than men, a bigger share of hiring going to women can indicate growth tilted toward lower wage jobs. And because women are more likely to hold multiple jobs, some of the increase may reflect people piecing together more hours. As Ullrich put it, "You could look at it and say, 'Yay, women.'" But, "I don't think it's necessarily a positive story for women overall."

For your bottom line, a labor market leaning toward lower pay and more job juggling can shape how fast incomes grow and how stable work feels, even when the top line job numbers look strong.
