Why This Shake-Up Matters
About a year after his last surprise reshuffle at the Finance Ministry, Prabowo made another change meant to soothe anxieties about where Southeast Asia's largest economy is headed. The appointment landed well with traders, with the benchmark equities gauge recovering much of its earlier slide. According to PT Samuel Sekuritas Indonesia's managing director of research, Harry Su, Nazara's elevation could "help restore market confidence and stabilize macro-fiscal management."
Who Nazara Is
Nazara is no newcomer. He has served as deputy finance minister since 2019 under then President Joko Widodo, and he kept that deputy post under Prabowo after being reappointed in October 2024. Before that, he headed the ministry's Fiscal Policy Agency for the 2016-2019 period, following a stint as acting chief in 2015. He previously served while Sri Mulyani Indrawati was finance minister, the highly regarded economist who was removed and replaced by Purbaya following run-ins with Prabowo.
He sat on the National Economic Committee from 2013 to 2014. in economics awarded by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

The Policy Backdrop
This change comes amid friction over revenue goals, budget execution, and coordination across policies. That includes how central funds are transferred to regional governments and how the wealth fund Danantara contributes, according to Su. PT Bank Danamon Jakarta's chief economist, Irman Faiz, expects Nazara's lengthy service to bolster fiscal-policy continuity and limit transition risks, adding that his technocratic background helps keep the state budget stable.
The Numbers And The Tightrope
For 2027, the government targets 6% growth alongside a budget gap equal to 2.4% of GDP. Bank Danamon projects 5.1% growth and a deficit near 2.75% that year, which is still under the 3% legal cap. The hard part is unchanged from past ministers: Nazara will need to align Prabowo's growth push with limited fiscal space, keep credibility intact, and shift money away from programs that do little for the broader economy. For your wallet, that translates to a policy mix that can either anchor inflation and rates or keep them jumpy, depending on how cleanly that balance gets struck.
