Qatar Posts Biggest Quarterly Deficit Since 2016 After Hormuz Disruption

Summary:
  • Qatar's second quarter budget gap hit 21.2 billion riyals, equal to $5.8 billion, the largest since late 2016.
  • LNG exports collapsed after late February, when Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz, leaving shipments at under 2 million tons in April to June 2026.
  • Overall revenue fell about 30% to 25.6 billion riyals, while non-energy receipts jumped to 25 billion and spending edged down 2.6% to 46.9 billion.

What happened to Qatar's budget

Qatar just printed its widest quarterly shortfall in almost a decade as gas income dried up. The finance ministry, posting on X, put the April to June deficit at 21.2 billion riyals, or $5.8 billion. That is the biggest gap since the end of 2016 and nearly twice the previous quarter's 10.3 billion riyals.

Why LNG exports plunged

After hostilities broke out in late February and Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar's tankers were cut off from their primary pathway to customers, the majority of whom are in Asia. Unlike Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Qatar lacks a backup corridor that skirts the strait. Before the conflict, the country accounted for about 20% of global LNG supply. Since then, shipments have fallen from roughly 20 million tons per quarter a year earlier to below 2 million in the April to June 2026 window.

Damage, forecasts, and government receipts

The crisis has also been physical. Iranian drones and missiles have repeatedly hit Qatar, causing damage running into the billions of dollars. In March, a drone attack compelled QatarEnergy to close the Ras Laffan export complex for the first time in close to 30 years of operations.

On the fiscal side, non-energy income almost quintupled from the first to the second quarter to 25 billion riyals, cushioning the blow from lost petroleum revenue. Even so, total revenue slid about 30% to 25.6 billion riyals, while expenditure dipped 2.6% to 46.9 billion.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.
  • The Fed is stuck between high inflation and a weak job market, and fixing one makes the other worse.
  • Higher rates also reprice roughly a third of America's $40 trillion national debt this year, which is why Washington wants cuts so badly.

What a Tariff Dividend Means for Your Money
  • A "tariff dividend" is the idea of taking money the government collects from tariffs and paying some of it back to citizens.
  • To judge the idea, you first need to know what a tariff is: a tax on imported goods, usually paid by the companies bringing them in.
  • Tariffs ripple through prices, businesses, and your investments, so the smart move is understanding those ripples, not just the headline.
