Meta Plans to Sell AI Tools and Computing to Businesses

Summary:
  • Zuckerberg told investors Meta sees a large enterprise opportunity in APIs, business agents and selling compute.
  • The first target is Meta's existing advertiser base, using AI agents across messaging platforms.
  • Meta plans to get paid when it delivers results, mirroring how its ad system works.

What Meta Is Planning

Meta launched an AI agent for businesses back in June, marking its entry into the enterprise AI space. But the company's ambitions go much further, as Mark Zuckerberg told investors on the company's second-quarter earnings call on July 29, 2026.

"We see a large enterprise opportunity to sell to businesses, including APIs, business agents, potentially selling compute directly, and other services that we're building for large customers," Zuckerberg said.

Meta's initial priority is to target its current advertiser community with AI agents that operate across messaging platforms and other channels. These tools enable companies to communicate with their clients via an AI interface. "And, just like the ad system, effectively, we will get paid when we deliver results for those businesses," Zuckerberg said. He described this as "an extension of the sales and the partnerships that we have with many millions of advertisers and hundreds of millions of small businesses that use our platforms."

Meta also plans to offer its internal tools to external customers later. "There are other enterprise customers who I think we're increasingly going to serve, too," Zuckerberg explained. "We're building coding and developing and internal productivity tools partially because we need to build them ourselves, and we need to make sure that we have tools that are tuned for ourselves. Now that we have those, we feel like there's a large opportunity to serve - whether that's small businesses or larger businesses."

Zuckerberg acknowledged that selling to the enterprise is a "different muscle" than Meta has historically used.

Selling Compute and Balancing Short-Term and Long-Term Plans

On selling compute directly to enterprise customers, Meta sees an opportunity to sell at "a significant premium over what we paid for it." However, Zuckerberg cautioned that it "would be foolish" to liquidate all computing capacity for immediate gains. Zuckerberg characterized Meta's strategy as a "portfolio" blending both enduring and near-term strategies for its computing resources.

"As we get closer to personal superintelligence, we are … going to need hardware that allows you to seamlessly interact with it," he noted.

Consumer AI and App Development

The enterprise push is not the only AI initiative. Additionally, consumers are being promised "personal AI agents" and smart glasses powered by AI that can see the world around them. Meta is also leveraging large language models to accelerate the development of its social application lineup.

Recently, Meta has released apps tailored for Marketplace vendors, Facebook Group managers, and a platform for vibe-coded games, among other experimental offerings. More are coming.

"I expect it to become a lot easier to ship new apps," said Zuckerberg. "So we are planning to build out more ideas and use our recommendation systems to scale them to the people who will find them interesting."
