What happened
On Thursday, Poundland Group Ltd submitted legal paperwork signaling it plans to enter administration, beginning insolvency proceedings a little more than a year after Gordon Brothers bought it for £1 ($1.38). The distressed buyer closed several outlets following last June's takeover and, in recent months, has struggled to secure a purchaser for the high street stalwart. Thursday's step endangers around 12,000 positions spread over roughly 600 locations. Poundland has been contacted for comment.
When Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group, it cast the company as a well-known name that required new funding and a reset of operations. After the transaction, Poundland still owed Pepco £30 million. Earlier this year, Gordon Brothers also acquired the fashion label LK Bennett from administration.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to revitalise Britain's high streets, though he has yet to set out specific measures to counter decades of decline.
Even turnaround specialists are running into headwinds. At the beginning of the year, Claire's Accessories went into insolvency proceedings, only months after Modella Capital acquired it out of administration. Modella is additionally seeking to overhaul the store network it bought from WH Smith Plc in 2025 and subsequently rebranded as TG Jones.
