Earnings and what powered the turn
Coinbase posted its first profitable quarter in a year, earning $719 million, or $2.51 per share. The profit lift reflected an unrealized mark up in the value of its crypto assets, after three straight quarters of losses.
Sales came in at $1.22 billion, about a 35% decline from the same quarter last year, matching the Bloomberg-surveyed consensus. Adjusted EBITDA was $333 million, a gauge of operating performance that strips out interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.
Subscriptions and services contributed 49% of total revenue, while the company said prediction markets were running at more than $200 million in annualized revenue.
Markets, the stock, and still-muted volatility
Results continue to swing with token prices. Bitcoin rose over 40% in the three months ended Sept. 30 after three straight quarterly drops, and Coinbase shares advanced more than 25% during the third quarter.
That rebound cut the stock's year-to-date decline to around 30%. Shares were little changed after hours. Even so, overall volatility - which typically lifts trading activity and exchange revenue - remains subdued as crypto works through a slow recovery from last year's slump. The next clear catalyst is still uncertain, and broader macroeconomic jitters hang over the sector.

Strategy, fees, and potential regulatory help
Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong has been widening the product set to reduce direct exposure to coin price swings, pitching Coinbase as an everything exchange. Traction in areas like derivatives, tokenized assets, and prediction markets should help support results while spot trading stays soft, and several of these lines could benefit from new rulemaking by the SEC and CFTC.
Competition from low-fee rivals such as Robinhood is intensifying. In September, Coinbase reduced what it charges a broad set of its most active traders, which reignited worries that exchange take rates could trend toward zero. As Mizuho's Dan Dolev put it, "Everyone wants to know if it's going to be the beginning of a take-rate decline." Historically, Coinbase has offset fee moves by adjusting pricing across customer segments. One more caution flag from Compass Point Research & Trading: "We don't expect a V-shaped recovery in 2027."
The bottom line for your portfolio
Coinbase is again profitable, but the quarter underlines how tethered the business still is to crypto prices even as newer lines grow. For investors, the key tells are trading volumes, fee pressure, and whether derivatives, tokenized assets, and prediction markets keep cushioning results while volatility stays quiet.
