What the board plans to vote on
Situated in northern Virginia's Data Center Alley, Loudoun County advanced a measure to pause up to a one‑year review of new data center and substation proposals. Seven of the nine Board of Supervisors members supported turning the pause into a formal resolution, with a vote slated for October. Among global hubs, Loudoun County hosts the biggest cluster of data centers.
Who is affected and why residents complain
Supervisor Juli Briskman said roughly 13 filings that have not yet reached the planning commission could be caught in the pause. The push comes after residents argued the surge in construction is hurting day-to-day life, pointing to noise, facilities built near homes, and the power infrastructure strung through their backyards.
Local scale and the national backdrop
The county says the data center boom has generated about 17,000 jobs and is expected to bring in $1.3 billion in local tax receipts during fiscal 2027. It's also a dynamic playing out nationwide, with more than 300 local moratoriums tracked by Interconnected Capital LLC.

What happens next and what it means for your money
County officials say they plan to resume reviewing proposals after new zoning rules are finalized in 2027. As Briskman put it, "They feel like they're up to their eyeballs in issues with data centers," adding, "The community has been begging us to do this." If you own property nearby, build or sell equipment into the sector, or just track power demand, expect timelines to stretch and permitting risk to rise until the new rules are set.
