What Huang said at Salesforce
At a Salesforce Inc. event on Tuesday, Jensen Huang reiterated his view that the current system pressures AI makers to act responsibly without new rules. He pushed back on the idea that companies must pick between safety and speed, calling that a "false choice." As he put it, "You can definitely have both at the same time." Huang added, "You pace yourself until you're confident you're releasing something that the market would appreciate. The market forces are already there." He made the remarks in a conversation with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
How he frames safety and when to pause
Huang said companies can choose not to ship anything they believe would be harmful. "Safety is paramount," he said. "In a lot of ways, it's job one. However, safety is an engineering problem." And if a situation arises where "the company is out of control and the product's not going to be safe, take a pause and make sure you get it right," he said.
The fight over slowing AI
Huang's stance lands in the middle of a heated argument about managing AI risk. Leaders from Anthropic PBC and several other labs have discussed organizing a slowdown in development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently published a 3,800-word essay endorsing that approach, coming after a high-profile departure in which an Anthropic employee alleged the company and rival OpenAI were "gambling with our lives" because their technology could threaten humanity.
Others prefer different guardrails: on Tuesday, Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg urged that labs lean on independent evaluators and advisers to assess model safety. Huang is one of the industry's most prominent boosters, and Nvidia is the leading supplier of AI accelerators, the chips powering a massive build-out of data centers. Earlier this week, he joined President Donald Trump for an onstage phone call in which they pushed back on slowing AI development.

Why it matters for your wallet
The rules of the road for AI are being shaped in real time. One camp is calling for coordinated brakes, another wants third-party testing, and Huang says market pressure can do the job. How this debate settles will influence how AI features show up in products you use and who gets to set the guardrails.
