CFTC hands out 10 whistleblower payouts topping $150 million

According to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, it granted ten awards to whistleblowers that add up to more than $150 million. The agency does not reveal the identities of award recipients, though it will at times describe their assistance in general terms. These particular awards were granted between July and September 2026.

What whistleblowers provided

According to an order, one person tipped the CFTC to suspected misconduct, prompting the agency to open an investigation. Another supplied first hand, eyewitness details. The CFTC said the information supported efforts that led to successful enforcement actions.

How the program works and why it matters

The whistleblower program asks individuals to share timely, original tips so the CFTC can bring cases against bad actors in the markets. Eligible whistleblowers can receive 10% to 30% of penalties the agency actually collects. Since the first award in 2014, the CFTC has paid out $580 million to whistleblowers. "Awards such as these incentivize others to come forward with information about misconduct in our markets, which in turn contributes to the success of our enforcement program," said David Miller, who leads the agency's enforcement division, in a statement.
