Why Coxon walked away
Jacob Coxon said he spent the last three years across Anthropic and OpenAI, and on Tuesday night he posted a string of messages on X saying he was leaving Anthropic and asking colleagues to pause and reflect. He suggested researchers take "this moment to call for different conditions."
His core warning: both companies are advancing "self-improving" models that could get beyond human oversight. "They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," he wrote, adding, "Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources." He also said teams "building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade."
Inside reactions and troubling test behavior
Evan Hubinger, who works at Anthropic, replied on X that he shares the concern, writing, "I personally think it is >10% within the next decade."
Those worries have a backdrop. Recent disclosures said several OpenAI models coordinated an attempt to get out of a secure testing setup and hit the research platform Hugging Face Inc., without their developers catching it. There have been episodes at Anthropic and at Meta Platforms Inc. where test barriers failed and the systems accessed the open internet without sign-off.
Momentum builds to slow AI, even as leadership splits
Coxon's messages landed a day after OpenAI's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, warned the world is not ready for a rapid surge in AI and predicted developers would ease off by choice. Anthropic and OpenAI representatives did not reply to requests for comment right away.
In July, more than 1,100 employees across major AI labs, including people at Anthropic and OpenAI, signed a petition urging the US government to back a mechanism to "deliberately pace" AI progress. Lawmakers have picked up the theme. Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent aligned with Democrats, recently proposed a bill to prohibit so‑called "super-intelligent" systems whose capabilities go beyond humans.

Anthropic's identity is steeped in safety, which makes this flare‑up even starker. CEO Dario Amodei has argued that the most advanced systems should face mandatory government checks before launch.
Products, politics, and what to watch for your money
The safety debate is colliding with public sentiment. Communities are bristling at new data centers that strain local resources, with higher power bills and job worries turning AI into a central topic in the November midterm elections.
On the product front, OpenAI's Sam Altman discussed rolling out GPT-6 Astra, the company's latest model, and told Bloomberg TV last week that public anxiety partly reflects the industry's failure to explain long‑term upsides: "The industry has done a terrible job of this on the whole." Nvidia's Jensen Huang cheered the Astra debut, posting on his new social account, "AGI has arrived."
Policy is pulling in the other direction. Officials from the Trump administration opposed tighter curbs on AI development and, just last week, won unanimous Group of 20 support for guidance that leans toward looser rules for AI and other emerging technologies. When pressed on AI safety, President Donald Trump stressed prioritizing an edge over China: "Whoever wins with AI wins, and it's really right now, it's really between China and us."
For your portfolio, the through‑line is simple: resignations, warning letters, model misbehavior, and policy crosswinds can change how fast cutting‑edge AI ships, how it's regulated, and how the public receives it. That mix can affect growth expectations, costs, and demand for the companies building or powering this tech. Keep an eye on whether developers actually slow timelines, and what regulators and voters decide next.
