Who was hired and why it matters
The UK government has selected André Loranger to lead the Office for National Statistics, filling the top job after an extended vacancy. Loranger has run Statistics Canada for over two years and, per his LinkedIn profile, has spent close to 30 years at the agency. The appointment is meant to help rebuild trust in the UK's official numbers after a bruising stretch.
What went wrong at the ONS
Confidence in the UK's data took a hit when response rates to surveys fell off, setting off a credibility crunch. In 2023 the ONS paused publication of key gauges of the jobs market, including the unemployment rate, because of accuracy worries. Mistakes were later identified in other major data sets, such as inflation.
The upheaval peaked last year, with Ian Diamond citing health reasons for his departure, and a scathing government review highlighting deep-rooted cultural issues. Officials have also voiced irritation at how long it took to land a new national statistician. At the same time, the UK Statistics Authority - the body in charge of the ONS - still does not have a permanent chair.

What comes next and why investors should care
To replace the old approach, the ONS is building a new online-first labor survey, though delays now push its rollout well into 2027. Penny Young, the interim chair of the UK Statistics Authority, said Loranger will "further drive improvement, as we continue to improve our economic statistics and prepare for Census 2031." For everyday investors, the takeaway is simple: cleaner, more reliable data shapes everything from inflation expectations to rate bets and growth forecasts, which feed directly into asset prices and paycheck decisions.
