Summary:
  • Top auction houses generated approximately $10 billion in revenue during H1 2026.
  • Christie's sales rose 71% to $4.5 billion, while Sotheby's hit a record $4.4 billion.
  • A T. rex fossil sold for $50.1 million and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's jacket fetched $960,000.

New Tech Money Is Flooding the Auction Floor

According to executives, the rebound is fueled by new fortunes generated by AI, IPOs, and stock market gains.

Auctioneers including Phillips and Heritage similarly experienced strong beginnings to the year.

"There are people willing to sell great objects and there are people spending great amounts of money to acquire those special one-of-one works," Christie's CEO Bonnie Brennan said at the Christie's Art + Tech Summit last week.

Sotheby's CEO Charles Stewart added: "The wealth being created now is the number one factor in our business right now. It's obviously very visible when you sit here in New York and talk about the SpaceX IPO and these different tech IPOs coming and the AI fever."

According to Artnet, eight items each fetched over $50 million in the first half, whereas zero did in 2024 and 2025. Topping the half-year sales was a Jackson Pollock drip painting, "Number 7A, 1948," that went for $181 million at Christie's. A Brancusi sculpture previously owned by media magnate S.I. Newhouse went for $107.6 million.

Hedge-fund magnate Ken Griffin bought a stegosaurus fossil from Sotheby's in 2024 for $44.6 million.

Charles Stewart commented, "Institutions as well as individuals are bidding up dinosaur fossils." A total of seven bidders competed over Gus for ten minutes.

"I say it's 'SpaceX to T. rex,'" Stewart said. "It's not just that these people have made the money. They're looking at market valuations and they're making a judgment about store of value."

Sotheby's sold a jersey that Jalen Brunson wore during Game 1 of the NBA finals against the Spurs for $1.024 million.

Phillips, in partnership with Bacs & Russo, announced $235 million in watch auctions during the first half, a record for the firm. The top-selling timepiece was an F.P. Journe Souscription Résonance that achieved $13.9 million. In recent years, Mark Zuckerberg has emerged as a prominent enthusiast of F.P. Journe.

"Thirty percent of our buyers in the first half were new to Christie's, with 47% of them millennials or younger, and 85% of bids were placed online," Brennan said.

"What we show people and how they engage with Christie's is evolving," she added.

Jeffrey Yin, who leads both Artsy and Artnet, commented: "People are spending money on fun, collectible items that they want to have."

This surge in auction revenue reflects a broader shift in the art and collectibles market, where newly minted tech billionaires are diversifying their portfolios with tangible assets. According to Sotheby's CEO, these buyers view items like dinosaur fossils and rare watches as stores of value, akin to real estate or gold. The trend is also evident in the growing demand for high-end timepieces, with Phillips and Bacs & Russo achieving a record $235 million in watch auctions, led by an F.P. Journe watch that sold for $13.9 million. Meanwhile, social media and online platforms have lowered the barrier to entry, attracting a younger, tech-savvy demographic.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.
  • The tradeoff is real: you give up some upside, and the two key numbers to check are maximum drawdown and correlation to the market.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

The U.S. Housing Market Just Flipped: Renting a Home Now Beats Buying One

  • The same median house costs 27% more than it did in 2021 while the monthly payment costs 90% more, and incomes rose a little more than 10%.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
  • The Federal Reserve spent a year signaling cheaper money, and its new chairman just warned that an interest rate hike may be coming instead.
  • The Fed is stuck between high inflation and a weak job market, and fixing one makes the other worse.
  • Higher rates also reprice roughly a third of America's $40 trillion national debt this year, which is why Washington wants cuts so badly.

  • The government took in about $5 trillion in taxes in 2025 and spent about $7 trillion, and the national debt is now over $40 trillion.
