Trump Cheers Giant Eagle's Summer Price Cuts, Calls on Competitors to Match

Summary:
  • President Trump praised Giant Eagle for reducing prices on over 300 grocery items this summer.
  • The average markdown is 10%, effective from July 9 through Labor Day.
  • Trump urged all other grocery chains to immediately match the actions of Giant Eagle and Walmart.

Trump's Endorsement of Giant Eagle's Discounts

The grocer launched its summer promotion on July 9, lowering prices by roughly 10% on items such as meats, fruits and vegetables, and warm-weather snacks. Trump said the grocer will be reducing prices "by a lot."

"Wonderful news! I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Giant Eagle's initiative follows announcements by Walmart and Sam's Club earlier in July that they were cutting costs on thousands of items nationwide this summer "to help customers and members make the most of the season while spending less on the products they need, want and love most." Among the items seeing lower prices at Walmart and Sam's Club are ground beef, drinks, home supplies, clothing, and children's toys.

"Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families," Trump said on Sunday.

"We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, just like Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST after the disaster we inherited from Sleepy Joe Biden," he added.

Following his praise, Trump pressed other supermarket operators to adopt similar price reductions as those from Giant Eagle and Walmart.

"Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart," he said. "Together, we will make America stronger and more affordable than ever before, and get rid of the stench and Inflation perpetrated on us by the Dumocrats and the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration!"

FOX Business requested comment from Giant Eagle but did not immediately receive a reply.

Broader Economic and Retail Context

These price cuts come amid ongoing inflation concerns that have weighed on household budgets for more than two years. Grocery prices, while easing from their peak in 2022, remain well above pre-pandemic levels, making any discount a welcome relief for many families. Trump has repeatedly blamed the Biden administration for the rising cost of living, and he has made fighting inflation a central plank of his campaign messaging.

The summer discount campaigns come as food-at-home prices remain about 25% higher than pre-pandemic levels, according to recent government data. While the annual inflation rate for groceries has moderated from its 2022 peak of over 13%, many households continue to feel squeezed. Retailers like Giant Eagle and Walmart are leveraging seasonal promotions to attract cost-conscious shoppers without committing to permanent price cuts, a strategy that aligns with broader industry efforts to maintain customer loyalty amid uncertain economic conditions.

By highlighting retail price reductions, he aims to show that his policies - or at least his public pressure - can deliver tangible savings for consumers. The summer promotions from major chains like Walmart and Giant Eagle also reflect a broader industry trend: retailers are competing aggressively for price-sensitive shoppers, using limited-time discounts to drive traffic without permanently lowering margins.
