Thailand eyes tiered EV taxes to tilt the playing field back to local makers

Summary:
  • On Thursday, excise department chief Pornchai Thiraveja said the national EV policy board gave preliminary approval to a three-level excise tax framework for electric vehicles.
  • The lowest rate would hit EVs built in Thailand, the highest would target fully imported models, with a middle tier for vehicles that rely partly on imported components.
  • Exact tax rates are still being set, and the plan will go to the cabinet for approval, with excise taxes used as the sole lever to push more local manufacturing and sourcing.

What changed and why

Bangkok is retooling an EV playbook that first leaned on low import barriers to jumpstart adoption and pull in Chinese makers. That move brought a flood of cheaper imports that escalated price battles and weighed on Thai-made cars, adding strain for Japanese brands that have anchored the country's auto scene for decades.

The new tax plan

After a meeting at the Finance Ministry, Pornchai Thiraveja said the EV policy board gave the nod, on a provisional basis, to a three-tier excise system: the lightest rate for EVs produced in Thailand, the heaviest for fully imported vehicles, and a middle band for models that use some imported parts. Specific rates are not yet set. The government wants to rely on excise taxes alone to nudge automakers and suppliers to expand production in Thailand and increase the use of locally made components, with deeper domestic manufacturing earning more favorable treatment. The proposal now moves to the cabinet for approval.

Bigger picture and what it means for your portfolio

Thailand stands as Southeast Asia's largest auto manufacturing center, the result of many decades of Japanese capital and an extensive supplier base. The industry contributes about 3% of GDP, supports more than half a million jobs, and is a key export pillar. As demand migrates away from combustion engines toward EVs, officials aim to safeguard that industrial core.

Chinese carmakers have pledged multi-billion-dollar investments to build local factories, and policymakers are increasingly pushing incentives that reward greater production in Thailand over import-heavy approaches. Meanwhile, Indonesia and Vietnam are wooing new models and plants with their own incentives, raising the competitive stakes. If you have exposure tied to Thailand's auto ecosystem, the cabinet's response and how quickly manufacturers localize components will be the signals to watch.

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.

An Interest Rate Hike in 2026? The Fed Just Broke Its Own Script
