Nigeria Sets Sights on 3 Million Barrels Per Day by 2030

Summary:
  • Nigeria's oil regulator says the country can reach 3 million barrels per day by 2030.
  • Average daily production in June 2026 hit 1.56 million barrels, the highest since April 2020.
  • ExxonMobil will begin drilling a new 40,000-barrel-per-day field in August 2026.

A Big Goal for Africa's Biggest Oil Producer

Nigeria wants to pump a lot more oil. After years of a lack of investment, the country has set a big target: 3 million barrels per day by the end of the decade.

Nigeria's oil output has struggled for years due to chronic underinvestment, rampant theft from pipelines, and a challenging regulatory environment. The country, once capable of producing over 2 million barrels daily, saw output dip below 1 million barrels at times. The new policies aim to restore investor confidence and reverse that decline. Nigeria's peak production reached roughly 2.4 million barrels per day in 2005, but a combination of corruption, militant attacks, and aging infrastructure steadily eroded that capacity.

What's Changing Under the Hood

President Bola Tinubu is trying to fix the sector with a new playbook. The government said it appointed Eyesan in December 2025 to help revitalize the sector. The government has since sped up permitting, streamlined the sales process, and offered tax waivers and other incentives.

Those changes are already paying off. Eyesan noted that domestic companies now contribute roughly 60% of Nigeria's oil production, a significant departure from the era dominated by international firms. Elevated oil prices - fueled partly by the US-Israeli war on Iran - have also encouraged local operators to restart old wells.

Renaissance Africa Energy, a local explorer, recently made a discovery that adds more momentum.

The Hard Part: New Wells, Not Just Old Ones

Restarting older wells presents lesser challenges. Starting completely new fields from scratch, a process that demands prolonged planning and huge capital outlays, poses a much greater difficulty.

McKinsey & Co.'s West African energy leader Oliver Onyekweli says that is the real test. "For the nation to improve its production, it needs new development in companies drilling and bringing new resources into production," he said. Without new drilling, the 2030 target might stay out of reach.

Industry observers are watching whether companies will commit to big new projects. The incentives are there - faster permits, tax breaks, higher oil prices. But the clock is ticking.

What This Means for Your Portfolio

If Nigeria succeeds, global oil supply gets a meaningful boost. More oil from a major producer can help keep prices from spiking, especially when geopolitical tensions already have markets on edge.

The bottom line: This is one more signal that the oil market is shifting. A country that was losing ground is now showing signs of life. For investors, the real question is whether those signs turn into sustained growth - or just another false start.

Keep an eye on drilling announcements. If the big companies start committing to new projects, that is the clearest sign Nigeria's plan is working. If not, the target may stay a nice idea on paper.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.

  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.
