DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash Cranks Up the AI Price War, Charging Under a Penny per Million Tokens

Published Sep 10, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • DeepSeek launched V4.1 Flash on Thursday, pricing usage at below one cent for every million tokens.
  • MiniMax Group Inc. and Z.AI sank more than 8% in Hong Kong, while Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. slipped more than 2%.
  • US-traded SK Hynix was down up to 5.8% Thursday, and Micron Technology Inc. fell as much as 5.3%.

Why This Launch Matters

If you've been waiting for AI that's cheap enough to run all day, DeepSeek is trying to hand you the keys. The Hangzhou-headquartered lab rolled out V4.1 Flash on Thursday, a pared-back model it says beats Moonshot's Kimi K3 while costing below a penny per million tokens. The move turns up the heat on everyone from Anthropic PBC to Z.AI Co., right as Anthropic and OpenAI get ready for public listings.

DeepSeek's pitch is blunt: good enough at a rock-bottom price can win the next wave of users. The lab known for inventive tricks says this version brings "more efficient architecture" at lower cost.

The New Economics of AI Agents

Cheap, high-powered Chinese models are redrawing the map for how developers, startups, and enterprises plan spending on AI agents that can run for hours with little oversight. The industry's spotlight has swung to agents that code through long sessions, call tools, or comb the web with minimal human input. Artificial Analysis even labeled the new landscape a DeepSeek "death zone": to keep up, rivals must either undercut on price or clearly outclass on capability. Starting Sept. 14, DeepSeek will retire V4-Pro by automatically routing all inference to V4.1 Flash and billing at the lower rates.

Market Moves and the Memory Squeeze

Investors noticed. MiniMax Group Inc. and Z.AI each tumbled more than 8% in Hong Kong, and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. slid more than 2%. Memory names also took a hit: SK Hynix's US-listed shares were down as much as 5.8% Thursday, while Micron fell up to 5.3%. Part of the backdrop is a persistent shortage of memory chips driven by AI demand, which has buoyed profits for suppliers like Micron and SK Hynix.

Under the Hood and What It Means for Your Wallet

DeepSeek says V4.1 Flash employs a "causal encoder-decoder" setup that lights up only a tiny portion of the model's 552 billion parameters at any moment - a smaller slice than V4-Pro required. The lab also reduced the KV cache, trimming needs for high-bandwidth memory and solid state drive storage. On tests, the new model tops V4-Pro in coding and agentic tasks, though it still trails the flagship systems from Anthropic and OpenAI. Net effect: if your workload leans toward long-running agents that write code, call tools, and browse, paying far less per unit of work could stretch the same budget a lot further, even if you give up some peak performance.

Are We in a Recession? 5 Threats to the Economy and Where the Money Is Moving
  • The S&P 500 is up about 13% this year, but without AI it's in a bear market, with nearly 40% of its companies down more than 20% for four months or longer.
  • Jackson, Briefs Finance's head of investing research, sees five threats: rising interest rates, sticky inflation, an economy propped up by AI, a struggling UK, and high oil prices.
  • The opportunities he's watching mostly sit outside the dollar: rising economies like Brazil and Indonesia, US-backed emerging market bonds paying 7% to 9%, and the shifts that fear creates.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.

How to Build Your First $2,000 Emergency Fund and Wipe Out Every Debt Over 10%
  • Your first money goal isn't investing, it's $2,000 in its own account named Do Not Touch, built by moving 10% of every paycheck into it automatically.
  • More than a third of American adults couldn't cover a $400 surprise bill with cash or savings, according to the Federal Reserve, and that's how one bad day turns into years of credit card payments.
  • Once the $2,000 is there, attack every debt charging more than 10% interest, highest rate first, because you can't out-invest a 22% credit card so paying it off is the investment.
