Crusoe lands multiyear cloud pact to power Perplexity's AI with Nvidia chips

Summary:
  • Crusoe signed a multiyear cloud agreement with Perplexity AI Inc. to supply and manage AI infrastructure.
  • Perplexity will train and run models on Nvidia chips provided by Crusoe, and more than 1,800 employees will get access to Perplexity's Enterprise Max product.
  • Crusoe is expanding its cloud business alongside mega data centers, competing with neoclouds like CoreWeave and Nebius, and has a $13 billion cloud agreement with Jane Street.

The deal and what Crusoe will deliver

Crusoe struck a multiyear cloud contract with Perplexity as it works to grow revenue from renting AI chips and software. Perplexity will use Nvidia hardware from Crusoe to both train and serve its models, with Crusoe overseeing the technology for its full lifespan, according to Erwan Menard, the senior vice president leading the cloud product. The arrangement also includes providing Perplexity's Enterprise Max product to more than 1,800 employees. Neither company disclosed financial terms.

Tech access and competitive positioning

Crusoe Cloud offers both Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices chips, a two-track approach that is unusual given many neocloud peers stick to a single supplier. Nate Kupp, who oversees engineering as well as the enterprise and infrastructure teams at Perplexity, said Crusoe is aiding the startup in obtaining more Nvidia GB300 chips that the company needs for its work. Menard added that Crusoe has access to Nvidia's newest processors, known as Vera Rubin, and that other contracted customers are already using them, without naming those clients.

How this fits with Crusoe's business

Crusoe is widely recognized for running big-ticket projects such as OpenAI's Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, and it is building out a cloud unit that competes with names like CoreWeave Inc. and Nebius Group NV. The company also inked a $13 billion agreement with Jane Street tied to its cloud arm. Menard said offering a cloud option draws in customers who do not want to stand up massive facilities of their own and helps lift revenue and profitability. "We love doing data centers at gigawatt scale and above because we make a big difference," he said. For smaller customers who only need access to chips or services, "we'll give you that value-add under the hood."

Setbacks and operations footprint

Not everything has been smooth for Crusoe's largest builds. OpenAI and partner Oracle opted not to take space in an expansion at the Abilene location, while Microsoft agreed to rent that addition. In a separate case, partners removed Crusoe from a Wyoming data center project intended for Alphabet Inc.'s Google. On the cloud side, Crusoe has deployments in the U.S., Iceland and Norway, with Israel expected to come online soon, Menard said. Perplexity is still a significant client of Amazon Web Services and of other large cloud vendors.

What this means for your portfolio

The takeaway: more routes to high-end AI chips without building a giant data center. Crusoe is trying to thread both needles, running mega projects while renting out Nvidia and AMD capacity, including GB300 access and the latest Vera Rubin processors. For anyone tracking the AI stack, that points to a broader supplier base and a quicker path to compute for startups and incumbents alike.

Why RAM Prices Are Soaring - and Where the Money Is Moving
  • Memory chips - the RAM inside phones, laptops, fridges, and trucks - are in a shortage Tim Cook called a 100-year flood, and some memory prices have climbed about 90% in a single quarter.
  • Four forces hit at once: AI demand, a production shutdown in 2023, build times that push any fix to 2028 at the earliest, and a bombed helium plant in Qatar.
  • The last two supply shocks ended in aggressive Fed rate hikes and market drops of around 45% and 20%, and this time Washington is spending heavily to bring memory production home.

How Is the Economy Doing? Washington Says It's Fixed, but the Numbers Don't Agree
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the economy is fixed because lower earners' incomes are now rising faster than top earners'.
  • The Atlanta Fed and Bank of America show different numbers, and Hilton, Marriott, and McDonald's can't agree on what they're seeing either.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
  • About $10 trillion of 401k money sits in a $77 trillion stock market, mostly through target date funds and S&P 500 funds. Roughly 30% of every S&P 500 dollar lands in five AI-heavy tech stocks.
  • Four bubble signals run hotter today than before the 2000 crash: top-ten concentration, tech's share of the index, the Buffett Indicator, and how much of the market index funds own.
  • You only lock in an AI bubble loss if you sell. The 2022, 2020, 2008, and 2000 crashes were all buying windows for long-term investors, and the US-China AI race means government money could keep flowing in.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
  • The Federal Reserve targets 2% inflation on purpose. Rising prices push extra dollars to investors and shrink the real cost of a $40 trillion national debt.
  • Investors who simply owned the S&P 500 gained about 150% over the same six years, and the Fed's September 16 decision will show whether it protects the dollar or the economy first.
