The Cost Problem in Air Defense
A European missile startup called Destinus announced it is creating a low-cost interceptor for air defense, designed to combat cheap yet destructive munitions like rocket artillery.
The company's CEO, Mikhail Kokorich, made the logic blunt. "An expensive air defense system is not sustainable," he said at the Farnborough International Airshow, where Destinus unveiled the program. "If you keep using an expensive missile to stop a cheap rocket, eventually the math stops working," Kokorich added.
A Missile Built for the Cost Equation
Kokorich said, "The Vorexon is prototyped now and will begin testing next year." The Vorexon has a 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) reach and carries an 8-kilogram (18-pound) warhead. The company designed the system to intercept fast-moving ballistic threats like Russia's BM-30.

At the airshow, the Vorexon mockup on display closely resembled a standard AIM-120 air-to-air missile in both dimensions and form. That missile type is employed by the NASAMS air-defense system made by Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace. The missile measures roughly 3.5 meters in height and is equipped with two pairs of control fins.
Kokorich stated, "Each radar-guided Vorexon missile is designed to be roughly as expensive as the incoming projectile," adding that the cost is "in the low hundreds of thousands" of dollars. A typical US artillery rocket carries a price tag of $150,000 or less.
Kokorich noted that while the Vorexon missiles are not fully launcher- or radar-agnostic, they will integrate well with other European systems. Kokorich also mentioned that Destinus already has several launch customers, but he would not identify them, adding that Ukraine was "ready to buy anything that is working."
The Vorexon aims to solve that by matching the cost of the incoming threat, allowing defenders to fire without exhausting their budgets. The Vorexon's price point is intended to eliminate that trade-off.
The need for such a weapon has become acute amid the war in Ukraine, where cheap drones and rockets have repeatedly overwhelmed expensive air-defense systems. European nations, after donating their own interceptors to Ukraine, now face the challenge of restocking their inventories with systems they can afford to use in large numbers. Destinus's Vorexon directly addresses that imbalance by offering a missile that does not break the bank per engagement, making sustained defense economically viable.
Rocket artillery such as Russia's BM-30 can fire volleys of cheap, unguided rockets that individually cost little but collectively cause devastating damage. Defending against such saturation attacks requires multiple interceptors per salvo, making the cost per shot a critical factor. The Vorexon's low price allows defenders to fire several interceptors at a single incoming rocket if necessary, without exhausting their budgets.
Europe's Push for Its Own Defense
The Vorexon fits into a bigger shift happening across Europe. Nations across Europe are actively working to build their own sovereign defense capabilities to reduce dependence on the United States. That creates a market for homegrown weapons, especially affordable ones that can be produced in volume. The war in Ukraine has accelerated this trend, as European governments seek to rapidly replace donated systems and stockpile interceptors that are economically sustainable over long engagements.
Destinus additionally participates in the Bliksem EXO consortium, which aims to create an exo-atmospheric interceptor for longer-range ballistic threats. The Vorexon fills the short-range gap in that lineup. By combining a close-in interceptor with a high-altitude counterpart, the consortium hopes to offer a layered air-defense architecture that European nations can procure without relying on American or Israeli systems.
