Trent's decision to accelerate Westside's expansion comes at a time when its stock has declined sharply, losing 48% of its value from its peak two years ago. The company's Zudio chain, previously a strong growth driver, now faces slowing sales and intense competition from larger players. With consumer spending under pressure due to inflation and macroeconomic uncertainty, the success of Westside's aggressive store rollout will depend on execution. The ₹25 billion fund will be used not only for new stores but also for technology upgrades and e-commerce growth.
Why Westside Is Suddenly in a Hurry
The shift comes because Trent's other big brand, Zudio, is hitting a wall. Zudio's revenue expansion is decelerating, and it contends with vigorous rivalry from large entities such as Reliance Industries and the Aditya Birla Group. Consumers are pulling back, too. In an April investor presentation, Trent said shoppers are spending cautiously because of inflation and "macro uncertainties."
That leaves Westside as the growth lever. The company has been overhauling store design and product range, and CEO Shailina Parti is confident. "We've been opening 10 to 15 stores each year, so to suddenly jump to a hundred stores is ambitious, but we're ready for it," she said.
What the Expansion Money Goes Toward
The 25 billion rupees will be used to accelerate retail footprint expansion, including new Westside stores, especially in northeastern states and major cities. It will also expand Westside's online business and international operations.

The company is also betting on AI to speed up design. Westside had 50 in-house designers before upgrading its software. Now it produces between 400 and 500 designs per week.
The goal is to cut production lead time for trendy items to 30 days - much faster than the current pace. "We're much faster than we ever were, but there's more to go," Parti said.
Rising inflation has weakened consumer spending, and the company also confronts constraints in securing retail space.
Trent's strategy reflects a broader trend in Indian retail where companies are pivoting towards higher-margin segments amid a slowdown in value fashion. With Zudio facing headwinds, Westside's repositioning as a faster, more design-driven brand could help Trent capture a different demographic. The ₹25 billion investment is substantial, but the company's ability to secure prime retail locations and manage operational costs will be critical.
What This Means for Investors
Trent's stock has been rough lately. The Westside plan is an attempt to reignite growth.
Analysts are watching closely. In a July 2 note, analysts Jignanshu Gor and Parth Shah of Bernstein wrote that they see Trent's confidence in Westside as grounded in a solid base. "Is Westside the new Zudio?" they asked. Their answer: maybe.
Faster design, better stores, and a bigger online slice might be enough to turn heads again.
